Twenty minutes by train outside of Amsterdam lies the Zaanse Schans, a district offering a snapshot of 18th and 19th century Dutch life. It is home to a bakery museum, cheese making factory, and most notably windmills, many of which are operational. Zaanse Schans is a place to visit with someone you love.

My midi Jonathan Simkhai dress is from the Spring 2016 collection. I was drawn to the lace appliqué detail, halter neck, and the pleated tulle skirt. Black and white is always a classic combination and I felt it was a piece I needed to add to my closet. I wore my favorite Giuseppe Zanotti suede cutout sandals with a recessed heel.

Dutch Costume Museum

In a 17th century canal house in the center of Amsterdam on the Herengracht Canal you will find the Dutch Costume Museum, an organization built to display the stories, crafts, and techniques of Dutch cultural heritage. I didn’t know much about Dutch costume, but was pleasantly surprised with what I found. As I would learn, the country’s traditional dress is heavily layered, full of lace bonnets and aprons, and covered in embroidery. The permanent collection covers the 12 provinces of Holland over 7 rooms. Costumes vary by region in reference to occupation, age, and functionality, but there were a lot of similarities.

Dutch Masters

Walking the streets of Amsterdam makes you feel as if you’re a character in a Rembrandt painting. The city has a culture rich in art that can be seen in the Dutch architecture and on every bicycle covered bridge. Amsterdam is peaceful, a beautiful blend of history and Tesla electric cars.

My wool double breasted coat is from the Fall 2009 Gucci collection. It was apart of look number 1 and was shown with a wide belt. It features a strong sharp shoulder and a small notched collar. I purchased this coat for the fit and cut but also for the black and white polka dot lining.
